About RUB to SEK
The Russian Ruble to Swedish Krona exchange rate is influenced by CBR interest rates, oil and gas prices, sanctions, and geopolitical developments, as well as Riksbank interest rates, inflation data, export performance, and Eurozone economic health. Both the Central Bank of Russia and Riksbank play crucial roles in determining the relative strength of these currencies.
The Russian ruble used to be one of the more interesting EM currencies to trade.. it was a classic oil play where you could basically express a Brent crude view through USDRUB and it worked pretty well. Then 2022 happened and everything changed. Western sanctions cut Russia off from SWIFT froze central bank reserves and basically made the ruble untradeable for most international participants. The Central Bank of Russia brought in capital controls jacked rates up to mental levels and managed to stabilise the currency domestically but the offshore market is essentially dead. Most major forex brokers suspended ruble pairs and liquidity disappeared. The onshore rate and whatever offshore rate you can find diverge massively at times and theres no reliable price discovery anymore. Even before the sanctions the ruble was always volatile and sensitive to oil prices political risk and the general mood around Russia. Now its in a category of its own really. If youre looking at this from a trading perspective theres honestly not much you can do with it through normal channels anymore. A cautionary tale about geopolitical risk if nothing else.. what was once a liquid EM currency became basically untouchable overnight.
The Swedish krona has had a rough few years and its been one of the weaker G10 currencies which is a bit surprising for a country thats generally well run with a strong economy. Sweden is in the EU but voted against adopting the euro back in 2003 and the Riksbank which is literally the worlds oldest central bank runs its own monetary policy. The SEK tends to trade as a higher beta version of the euro.. when risk sentiment is good it outperforms and when things go wrong it underperforms which is odd for a country with such solid fundamentals. EURSEK is the main pair and it can trend for extended periods which makes it quite nice for swing trading. USDSEK works too but you get more noise from the dollar side. Swedens economy is export heavy with big names in manufacturing tech and forestry products so global trade sentiment matters. The housing market has been a concern because Swedish household debt is among the highest in the developed world and rate hikes hit consumers hard. Liquidity is fine during European hours but drops off outside of that. A good currency for people who like Scandinavian macro plays and dont mind a bit of volatility.
